MUNISING — The Pictured Rocks Road Race (PRRR) celebrates its 50th anniversary on Sunday, June 29, drawing runners from across the state and beyond to the heart of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The half marathon and 10K courses wind through Munising’s historic streets and along the breathtaking Lake Superior shoreline, offering one of the most scenic racing experiences in the Midwest.
What began in 1976 as a local road race has grown into a signature summer tradition — one that celebrates not just endurance, but community.
“This race isn’t just about the miles, it’s about the people who make it happen,” said race organizer Rhonda Lassila. “From the volunteers to the families cheering on the sidewalk, everyone plays a part in making this day special. And reaching the 50-year mark? That’s something worth running for.”
To mark the milestone, this year’s event includes custom finisher awards made from locally sourced stone — each one unique, just like the runners who earn them. The PRRR has never been about flash; it’s about heart, hustle, and hometown grit.
The Munising Visitors Bureau, this year’s title sponsor, has played a key role in helping the race grow and draw visitors from across the region.
“Events like the Pictured Rocks Road Race are part of what makes Munising shine,” said Cori Cearley, executive director of the Munising Visitors Bureau. “People come for the race, but they stay to explore our trails, waterfalls and lake views. It’s an authentic U.P. experience, and it helps support our local businesses too.”
“The Pictured Rocks Road Race embodies the spirit of Munising,” Dr. Olson, a longtime participant and community supporter, added. “It’s more than a race; it’s a celebration of our community’s resilience and unity.”
Renee Bowerman, also a longtime participant, echoed that sentiment.
“Being part of PRRR is like being part of a family,” she said. “The energy, the smiles, the shared determination, it’s what makes this event so special every year.”
The event draws over 300 annually and supports local recreation programs and community events. Behind the scenes, dozens of volunteers, local businesses, and public safety teams help pull off race day with the kind of coordination and care that Munising is known for.
