Keweenaw Up North Diesel and Superior Land Improvements earn wins

SOUTH RANGE — In Portage Lake Little League Minors little league action Wednesday, Superior Land Improvements and Keweenaw up North Diesel came out winners.
Superior Land Improvements 13, Houghton Fire Department 2
The squad from Superior Land Improvements continued their winning ways with a 11-run victory over Houghton Fire Department.
The boys and girls in green jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back. Scoring that inning were Conley Aho, Maev Kero and Zane Pennala.
While Houghton Fire added two runs in the third, Superior Land countered with five of their own. They took advantage of four walks and a base hit by Denver Loukus.
Superior Land added another five runs in the fourth. This time it was base hits by Aho, Kero and Loukus that generated runs.
It was now a 13-2 lead for Superior with one inning to go. However the Superior Land defense stayed strong in Houghton Fire’s final at bat to preserve the win.
Keweenaw Up North Diesel 7, State Farm Dean Kangas 1
Keweenaw Up North Diesel scored in all of their innings except two and kept State Farm Dean Kangas to just one run in their 7-1 victory on Wednesday.
In their first at bat, Oren Aho crossed home for Keweenaw Up North to make a 1-0 game.
In the second frame, they added two more. Orrin Andress walked and later scored, as did Oden Rajala.
They made it a 4-0 game in the third with Aho walking and coming home on a Scott Pietila triple just two batters later.
State Farm’s only tally came in the fourth. Miles Kangas earned his way on with a single to left and Simon Sturos knocked him with an RBI single. It was now a 4-1 Keweenaw Up North lead headed into the fifth inning.
The Keweenaw boys tacked on three more in the sixth to seal the win. In that final frame, Scott Pietila walked, as did Tom Pietila. With two on, Andress cleared the bases with a triple and scored himself on a passed ball to end this one at 7-1.
