Calumet, L’Anse take part in season-opening bowling meet in Marquette

MARQUETTE — The Calumet Copper Kings and L’Anse Purple Hornets bowling teams opened their season Saturday in Marquette, in an Upper Peninsula Bowling Conference meet.

The Purple Hornets dropped all three of their matchups in the first shift, with the boys falling to Ishpeming/Negaunee, 37-3, the girls falling 30-10, and the X team falling 40-0.

In the second shift, the Calumet boys defeated Menominee 35-5, while the girls won by forfeit. The X team lost to Westwood, 36-4.

In high school bowling, schools field a boys team, a girls team, and an X team, which can be comprised of both boys and girls.

Teams bowl six baker games, where five bowlers each bowl two frames of one game. Typically, that means the first bowler takes the first and sixth frames, the second bowler gets the second and the seventh, etc.

Then each bowler bowls two individual games, with the highest score winning the points.

Matchups are scored on a 40-point system. Baker games are worth two points each. Individual games are worth one point each, total pins added of the five individual games bowled wins five points (this is called a team game score), and total pins added across both of the team game scores wins eight points.

In the first shift Saturday, L’Anse junior Willow Rexford scored a 214 game, which was good enough to be called an honor score.

Competing for L’Anse on the boys team are senior Kaleb Gerth, senior David Wilson Jr., junior Kydan Dean, junior Jerry Fish III, junior Tyson Olson, junior Schaafhausen, sophomore Amaru Fogg, and sophomore Morgan Gibbons.
