LAKE LINDEN — With two wins in two games on the young basketball season, the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes boys basketball squad has already matched their winning total from a year ago. Victory number two came Thursday night against Baraga, 64-58.

To say the least, coach Brett Poissant likes this winning trend.

“The boys are playing hard,” he said. “I am proud of their energy and effort.”

After being knotted at 11, the Lakes led 17-11 after one quarter of play. Not much changed in the second, and the Lakes took a 28-19 lead into the half.

Then came the third. It was a shootout, with the Vikings actually outscoring the Lakes, 27-20, and coming within two points at 46-48. However that is as close as they got.

“The third quarter was our best,” said Poissant. “They (Baraga) came out with pressure, but we stayed patient and made the shots we needed to make.

“We handled them well (by staying ahead).”

The Lakes closed out the fourth with 17 points. The Vikings had just 12.

“Hats off to the Lakes,” said Baraga coach Jon Boever. “They were the better team; they wanted it more than we did. Their offensive rebounding killed us. We were flat, and the Lakes came out and executed much better than we did.”

According to Poissant, the game ball goes to Brad Davis. He poured in a team high of 21 points.

“That is the best I have seen him work all year,” said Poissant.

He was followed in scoring by Josh Daavettila with 18. Blake Lebo had 16.

For the Vikings, Daniel Connor led with 27 points. Joseph Fish followed with 17 points–this included five triples. Easton Foucault sunk 12.
