Pioneers take two from Wolverines
HOUGHTON — With a 6-2 win on Friday and an 8-1 victory on Saturday, the Portage Lake Pioneers hockey team took both games over the weekend from the Calumet Wolverines.
In Friday’s game at Dee Stadium, Portage Lake struck three times in the first period and then twice in the second en route to the win.
Forward Bryce Hanner got things started just 45 seconds into the game. Goaltender A.J. Petrulis had the lone assist on the goal.
Forward Gaborik Carlson made it 2-0 two minutes later. Forward Dawson McKay picked up the assist on the goal.
Calumet got on the board at 4:21 when forward Logan Rastello found the net. Defenseman Jim Brey and forward Sherman Mowrey both assisted on the goal.
The game remained 2-1 for Portage Lake (5-0 overall) until Carlson scored his second of the night at 13:29. Dawson McKay and forward Dylan Farmer both earned assists on the play.
Defenseman Riley McKay extended the Pioneers’ lead to 4-1 with a goal just 3:14 into the second period. Carlson picked up his first assist of the night on the goal.
Dawson McKay then made it 5-1 with a goal at 10:48. Defenseman Ross Rouleau earned the assist.
Farmer put the Pioneers up 6-1 6:03 into the third. His goal was also assisted by Carlson, who finished with a four-point night.
Brey pulled the Wolverines (1-3 overall) back within four with 4:48 remaining. Forwards Brent Loukus and Gabe Coppo both assisted on the goal.
Petrulis stopped 34 shots to earn the win. Tyler Hubbard stopped 33 in the loss for Calumet.
Saturday, the Pioneers scored three times in the first period and five times in the third en route to the win at the Calumet Colosseum.
Farmer got Portage Lake on the board just 5:55 in. Defenseman Matt Mantta picked up the assist on the play.
Forward Brett Hauswirth and defenseman Brendan Erickson scored 2:11 apart to make it 3-0. Hauswirth’s tally was assisted by defenseman Charlie Turner and forward Spencer Donnelly at 7:44. Erickson’s goal was assisted by Carlson at 9:55.
Mowery cut into the Pioneers’ lead with a goal at 8:25 of the second period. Rastello and forward Garrett Parker both assisted on the goal.
All five third-period tallies for the Pioneers came from a different goal scorer.
Hanner got things started just 2:45 in with a goal off a feed from forward Peter Rouleau. Mantta then made it 5-1 with a goal 1:30 later. Carlson earned the lone assist.
Forward Connor Raffaelli scored at 6:26. Hanner and Peter Rouleau both picked up assists.
Carlson scored his third of the weekend at 13:16. Goaltender Camden Burggrabe had the lone assist.
Forward Landon Stevens closed out the scoring with 4:40 left in the contest. Donnelly picked up the only assist on the play.
Burggrabe stopped 39 of 40 shots from the Wolverines to earn the win. Hubbard stopped 28 in the loss for Calumet.

Portage Lake heads to Green Bay, Wisconsin, Friday to face the DePere Deacons at 8 p.m. Saturday, they will take on Fox Cities in Appleton, Wisconsin. The Wolverines travel Saturday to face Eagle River at the Eagle River Sports Arena.
