Roundup: Copper Kings, Gremlins boys earn wins Thursday

LAKE LINDEN — The Calumet Copper Kings boys used a big second quarter to create some separation between themselves and the host Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes Thursday. They held off a big push by the Lakes late to come away with a 58-53 win.
Peter Torola led the Copper Kings with 18 points, including picking up a pair of free throws in the fourth to cap his scoring.
He was one of three Calumet players in double figures as Owen Loukus had 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and Andrew Junttila had 14, including a 3-pointer and three free throws.
For the Lakes, Blake Lebo led all scorers with 20 points, including two 3-pointers. Josh Daavettila added 16.
A 3-pointer from Owen Loukus of the Copper Kings was matched by one from Lebo in the first quarter. Despite Lebo scoring seven points in the opening frame, Calumet led 12-11.
In the second, Loukus hit two more 3-pointers and Torola added three baskets. Daavettila responded with two for the Lakes, but Calumet outscored Lake Linden 17-10 in the frame, which gave the Copper Kings a 29-21 lead at the break.
In the third, Lebo had another five points and Daavettila scored four, but Calumet got six from Torola as part of a 14-point quarter.
Leading 43-32 heading into the fourth, the Copper Kings had to hold on over the last eight minutes. A 3-pointer from Junttila and eight points helped Calumet score 15 in the quarter.
The Lakes got eight points from Lebo, five from Brad Davis and six from Daavettila to score 21.
Gremlins nearly double up Wykons
IRON RIVER — The Houghton Gremlins rolled to an 80-47 victory over the West Iron County Wykons Thursday on the road.
“We had a great team effort tonight with really good ball movement on the offensive side,” said Gremlins coach Jared Lawson.
Terrence Nolan led the team with 32 points. Houghton also had two others in double figures as Alex Hebert put up 15 and Mason Mayo scored 12.
The Wykons were led by Seth Oberlin, who had 21 points on the night.
