Copper Kings hockey doubles up Pioneers
CALUMET — With goals from three different skaters and three goals combined over the final two periods, the Calumet Copper Kings hockey team earned a 4-2 win over the Gabriel Richard Pioneers Tuesday at the Calumet Colosseum.
With the win, the Copper Kings improved to 11-4-1 on the season.
Co-captain Nathan Londo scored twice in the third period to both give the Copper Kings the lead and seal the win.
His first tally came with just 47 seconds left in regulation. Co-captain Erik Loukus and junior forward Brady Boberg both earned assists on Londo’s 15th goal of the season.
Londo then scored again 25 seconds later, this time into an empty net. Junior defenseman Jax Carlson earned the lone assist on the goal.
Gabriel Richard threw 18 shots at Copper Kings goaltender Beau Jukuri in the first period, but it was Calumet who scored first. Junior forward Luke Hamlin scored 10:29 in. His sixth goal of the season was assisted by Londo and Erik Loukus.
The Pioneers got back-to-back goals from Matthew Hillock and Andrew Magiera 3:16 apart to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
In the second period, Boberg scored his seventh goal of the season at 8:52. Londo earned the lone assist on the tally, which was Boberg’s fifth in his last two games.
Jukuri, a junior, made 25 saves to earn the win for the Copper Kings.

Calumet is back in action Friday and Saturday when they host the University of Detroit Jesuit at the Calumet Colosseum. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. both nights.
