RSVP program valuable for older workers

Ask most any employer what sets older workers aside from younger ones and you’re likely to hear something along the lines of the following: Older workers often have superior work ethics, they are experienced, they are comparatively low maintenance and they typically show up on time.

Of course, all of that can be filed under what we, in the journalism business, term glittering generalities — concepts and theories that are rooted, to some degree, in fact but might vary a great deal from person to person.

Still, older workers very often are sought out, if nothing else, for their experience. The same can be said for senior citizens who have retired from active work but who very often wish to remain involved.

Marquette County’s Retired Senior & Volunteer Program is, to a large degree, predicated on that fact. The program, run through Marquette County’s Aging Services Department, currently has 256 volunteers at 56 different agencies throughout the community.

The volunteers can help their community by offering their time, talent and wisdom, and the volunteers also benefit by getting involved with their community, learning new skills and meeting new people.

So, if you’re age 55 and above, and want to assist a local organization in a volunteer position, contact the RSVP program at 906-315-2607, or visit co.marquette.mi.us/.

They’ll be glad to hear from you.
