Roundup: Hancock wins, Jeffers, Baraga, L’Anse lose

LAKE LINDEN — Hancock took the court with just its starting five and no subs, but the Bulldogs still managed to pull off a 48-42 nonconference victory over Lake Linden-Hubbell, Monday in Lake Linden. 

The Bulldogs were led by Joe Watson with 17 points and Jamie Sintkowski who added 11. They also got nine points apiece from Devin Raasio and Peyton Anderson. 

Peter Heikkinen was the leading scorer for LL-H with 11 points. Caleb Gregoire had 10 and Carter Crouch chipped in with nine points on three 3-pointers. 

Next up Hancock (1-1) hosts Houghton on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. and LL-H (2-1) welcomes Calumet at the same time.

WAKEFIELD — Jacob Suzik scored 39 points as Wakefield-Marenisco (3-0, 3-0) routed Jeffers 64-43 Monday night in Copper Mountain Conference boys basketball.

“He just dominated the game, he took the game right over for us,” W-M coach Terry Fetters said. “He was on a mission for us tonight. Jeffers’ big guy (David Jukkala) got in foul trouble early, he just attacked the basket all night long. They just couldn’t stop him.”

Austin Kinnunen led Jeffers (0-3, 0-3) with 12 points and Carson Turner scored 11.

Next, Jeffers hosts Chassell on Monday.

BARAGA — Watersmeet held off Baraga for a 52-51 nonconference win Monday night.

The Vikings made a shot at the buzzer, but it was inside the 3-point line, so the Nimrods survived with a one-point victory.

The Nimrods led 34-17 at the half and then had to fight for the victory.

“We came out in the first half, shooting the ball pretty well and then in the second half, the tide turned,” Watersmeet coach George Peterson III said.

Ben Winkka led Watersmeet with 20 points and Howard Caron had 19. Taylor McGeshick had 14 rebounds.

Colton Lindemann led Baraga with 13 points and Gunner Lindemann had 10.

Watersmeet (1-2) hosts Phelps Monday night.

WESTWOOD –The L’Anse Purple Hornets fell 57-6 to the Westwood Patriots Monday in a nonconference contest.
