On the Fairness Doctrine

The Daily Mining Gazette recently received a call from a reader who was upset that we ran Connie Shultz’s column on Nov. 19, with no conservative counterpoint. The caller insisted that we were violating the Fairness Doctrine by not providing an immediate counterpoint alongside the column on the page. However, the Fairness Doctrine never applied to newspapers, and we at the Gazette would argue we already offer several diverse viewpoints on our editorial page. In 1949, the Federal Communications Commission introduced the Fairness Doctrine, replacing the Mayflower Doctrine that had come ...

Why Camp Kitwen will not work as a new, improved jail

With the failure of Houghton County’s attempt for funds to build an expensive addition to the current court house to improve the jail conditions, the county has needed to do a large amount of soul searching before putting a new recommendation back in front of voters. One of the first steps in this search was the formation of the Houghton County Jail Task Force. According to the materials sent out for the monthly meeting of the city of Hancock for November, the task force announced on Sept. 4, 2019, that they had voted on one possible site where a potential new jail could be built, ...

11 months in, the DMG is still adjusting to new schedule

We at the Daily Mining Gazette are entering our 11th month as a paper that prints at night as opposed to one that prints in the late morning/early afternoon. We fully admit, it has been a bumpy ride. This move was made, in part, to help save the paper money, and also made, in part, to meet the delivery deadlines of the U.S. Postal Service. Our coordination with the USPS is the main reason why we no longer have papers on national holidays, since the mail is not delivered on those days. After 11 months of hearing your frustrations at our print schedule, we are in the early stages of ...

Rotary raises money for battle with polio

This past Thursday was World Polio Day, a day for members of the Rotary International organization to rally the world around their work to “eradicate” the disease forever. Poliomyelitis, or polio as it is commonly known, is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in parts of the world. Poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in hours. It can strike people of any age, but mainly affects children under the age of five. Polio can be prevented by vaccines, but it is not curable. For more than 30 years, Rotary and its ...

MSP posts will serve as medication disposal sites

The Michigan State Police is asking local residents to bring their expired, unused or unwanted medication to their posts as part of the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day next Saturday, Oct. 26. The Drug Take-Back Day is one of two annual events held in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration and other law enforcement agencies. National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is held twice a year, in April and October. During the April 2019 effort, the MSP collected 1,184 pounds of drugs statewide. All 30 of the MSP’s posts will participate in the effort from 10 a.m. ...

Go ahead and ‘Stuff a blue goose’

Starting this weekend, troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post and five local grocery stores in Baraga and Houghton counties will be working together to host a special series of events known as “Stuff a blue goose.” We at the Daily Mining Gazette cannot express how important events like these are. The events are being held in conjunction with the 2019 Michigan Harvest Gathering Campaign with the intention of raising hunger awareness and providing food to local food pantries. The troopers will be at Pat’s Foods in L’Anse and Calumet, Econo Foods in Houghton, ...
