Editor: The Copper Country Angel Mission and The Salvation Army would like to thank all the groups, businesses, and people who contributed to the Stuff the Bus School Backpack Program. More Money for Schools? Yes, Please! Editor: As a proud Hancock resident, I believe deeply in the power of a strong public education system. After decades of disinvestment, Michigan schools remain underfunded, needing an additional $4.5 billion just to be able to give every student the education they need and deserve. Democrats instead are demanding an extension of enhanced subsidies that help make healthcare affordable for Americans obtaining it through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), as well as a reversal of Medicaid cuts included in Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill.” Although Michigan’s recently passed budget fortunately preserves ...

Amazing service Editor I am writing this letter to publicly thank the owners of The Shipping Shop (Emily and Jacob) and acknowledge the amazing service and professionalism they offered before, during and after packaging and shipping my belongings. I retired this summer and wanted to see if retiring abroad was for me. But, I failed to understand how much time and effort was required for every single part of the endeavor, including, but not limited to sorting the possessions into discard, ship and give away possessions, as well as trying to time the various events into a logical ...

Just say 'no thanks' Editor: “Tax the rich, fund the schools”... or not. There is presently a petition drive going on to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot, known as “Invest in MI kids” The key talking point will be putting a “fair” “surcharge” on the wealthy by increasing the taxes on any earned income over $500K (single) or $1 million (marries filing jointly) and adding a billion dollars a year to education in Michigan. Sounds great, right? Not so much. This proposed change has 3 key flaws. 1. The Michigan constitution currently prohibits a ...
