To the editor: To my friends on the Right... This country was founded on compromise from the start. “Left” and “Right” are more modern terms, but the tension has been there from the get go. My side may label Trump a fascist. Your side may label Harris a communist. But, neither are either of those things. We’ve been a mixed economy from the start. We are not raw capitalist nor raw socialist. We have private business (from P and G to mom and pop stores) and public service (from schools to fire houses). To the editor: With the election on Tuesday, it’s time to recognize the incredible work of our local election clerks, staff, and poll workers this year. Given the challenges COVID-19 has posed for voter registration, early voting, polling places, and more, these heroes have moved mountains to make voting safe, secure, and accessible this year. A strong democracy is one where everyone participates, and more than 2 million Michiganders have already voted. To the editor: On November 9, 1975 (45 years ago), a gigantic ore freighter, The Edmund Fitzgerald, left Superior, Wisconsin, loaded with 26,000 tons of iron ore under the direction of Capt. Ernest M. McSorley. Following closely behind was the Arthur M. Anderson captained by Bernie Cooper. The two ships maintained frequent radio contact. To the editor: This letter is in regards to an article that appeared on the outdoors page of the Gazette on Friday, Oct. 23, written by Mr. Jim Junttila. Mr. Junttila talks about grouse and woodcock hunting with dogs and what to do should you encounter a porcupine. I have to take exception to the tips he provided from a book written by a Tim “Professor Partridge” Flanigan. He stated porkies should be avoided at all costs, especially if you take the dog to the vet. Harassment or collusion

To the editor: I have been watching the story that apparently started last March with a phone that has been described as threatening, harassing, and a prank. By what was described by the county clerk, it appears purely threatening. Numerous juvenile excuses, and the ignorance of the telephone system operation and its retention of records, if I would judge correctly, the facts and truth are with the clerk. Too many excuses and rationalizations by the caller and listeners are very hurried and convoluted, and they should hope that a recorded conversation is not waiting for a court ...

Deep dive into local recycling

To the editor: The Houghton County Board seems dead set on dumping the Houghton County Transfer Station, a self-sustaining operation, so Houghton County can have county wide recycling. Houghton County already has county wide recycling. Waste Management picks up recycling in Houghton and Hancock. As far as I know, residents in Kenton, Sidnaw, Donken and other areas of the county can pay Waste Management to take their recyclable materials.
