To the editor: I’m proud to live in a country that was founded on the principle of representing its citizens. Perhaps, though, we could make our democracy even more representative of the citizens’ voices. Several countries and US states are already doing that, using a system called ranked choice voting (RCV). The reward is when they discover Waldo. More than fun, this game builds perception skills, persistence and focus.

To the editor: Some 45+ years ago I was newly minted Internal Medicine doc, having within the past year joined the practice of Dr. Janners in Hancock. It was a busy Monday morning when I got a call from the ER that one of my elderly patients looked like he had had a stroke. I ran over and after doing an exam, decided it didn’t look like an ordinary stroke. A quick trip to the library made me decide that this looked more like botulism than a stroke. According to Michigan planning enabling act, “The legislative body may remove a member of the planning commission for misfeasance, malfeasance, or nonfeasance in office upon written charges and after a public hearing.” This is a high bar intended to prevent powerful special interests or the County Board itself from influencing the nonpolitical planning commission.
