Faith Perspective: Humans are to blame

Have you noticed that environmentalists have replaced the term global warming with climate change? Some decades ago, their scare tactics warned of a new ice age. Admittedly, they don’t exactly know what will be happening to our environment except that it will be bad. They are correct. It will be horrible. The motivation behind scientists, ecologists and others is to blame humans for the degradation of planet Earth. Well, they’re right. The Tribulation judgments that will hammer the Earth are coming because of the gross sins that are sweeping the globe. Sadly, though, the motivation ...

Reaction to seaplanes in Hubbell

This letter is in response to the public hearing that was held by the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy hearing on Thursday, May 23, regarding the seaplane airport in Hubbell. The reason for the public hearing was because of a “misunderstanding” that inconveniently requires the owner and EGLE to present a public comment period on a controversial topic: a loud seaplane airport in Torch Lake. The public hearing is necessary before a permit to operate may be granted. Until the permit is granted, the operation cannot legally proceed. As many residents on Torch Lake ...

Faith Perspective: Millions of deaths attributed to militants and extremists

Did German Christians cause the holocaust? Nazis executed German army officers who tried to assassinate Adolf Hitler to stop his war against the Jews. Many Germans didn’t know about nazi atrocities. Of 6 million Jews who lost their lives, 3% died in Germany, but 97% died elsewhere. Half (3 million) perished in Poland. German voters didn’t elect Hitler. He lost the 1932 presidential election by 7 million votes. President Hindenburg appointed him as chancellor in 1933. In 1935, Kaiser Wilhelm (in exile) condemned the Nazi persecution of Jews. Hitler was a pagan. He rejected ...

Actions speak louder than words

We are writing in response to the opinion letter titled “Ahmeek Manufacturer Aims to be Good Neighbors,” published on April 24, 2024 in the Gazette. While we appreciate Neuvokas’s effort to address community concerns, several points warrant clarification. First, Neuvokas has consistently attempted to placate us with empty gestures since 2021, when formal complaints were initiated by Ahmeek residents. However, attempts at appeasement do not equate to effective resolution of the underlying issues. Merely attempting to pacify affected residents, such as offering an open house and ...

Faith Perspective: Third letter to Christian fundamentalists

You have faith that the Bible is the literal word of a Supreme Being. Just what is faith? Faith is believing in something without sufficient evidence. In contrast, trust is believing in something with sufficient evidence. We trust that the sun will rise in the morning and each step we take will be governed by the law of gravity; that the car we drive will function properly and take us to our destination; and that the pilots that control our aircraft are well-trained and sober. We trust our physicians and surgeons when our life is in their hands; our lawyers when they give us advice or ...

Windigo who?

The Wisconsin Windigo is a Green Bay-based team that plays in the North American Hockey League. Their connection to the Copper Country? The coach, Blake Hietala, is formerly from Houghton and played for Michigan Tech. Their roster does or did include two local players who aren’t regulars and now two MTU prospects not from our area. So why do full 20-inch plus Windigo game stories appear weekly in the sports pages of the Gazette? That’s the $64,000 question. Quite some time ago, I left a voicemail for the sports editor, asking him to tell me what I’m missing. No call back. More ...
