Safe Light for Migrating Birds Editor: An estimated one billion birds die from window strikes every year in the U.S. Simply turning down lights can reduce bird strikes by 80%. Buildings and homes are encouraged to adopt “Safe Light for Safe Flight” during migration time: 11 p.m. - 6 a.m. in the spring from March 15 – May 31 and in the fall: August 15 -October 15. Navy Street Editor: There has recently been two letters to the editor regarding the completion of the Navy Street project on the Hancock waterfront. The first writer is a resident of the condos; the second writer lives nearby on the paved roadway to the east of the condos. Both writers objected for several reasons including engineering considerations, water, runoff cost, and other factors listed in their letters. Editor: Michigan’s EGLE department will decide by July whether to permit the Great Lakes tunnel proposed in 2018. By extending Line 5 operation until the tunnel is ready, Enbridge makes $8 billion. The tunnel is an expensive bandaid for only 4 of Line 5’s 645 miles. If built, Michigan must own it for another century of oil to Sarnia. Enbridge plans to operate 78-year-old Line 5 while boring the tunnel directly below it — a dangerous six year undertaking.
