Editor: Michigan’s EGLE department will decide by July whether to permit the Great Lakes tunnel proposed in 2018. By extending Line 5 operation until the tunnel is ready, Enbridge makes $8 billion. The tunnel is an expensive bandaid for only 4 of Line 5’s 645 miles. If built, Michigan must own it for another century of oil to Sarnia. Enbridge plans to operate 78-year-old Line 5 while boring the tunnel directly below it — a dangerous six year undertaking. Enbridge chooses to risk the Great Lakes despite having an 11-year-old land route to Sarnia that could carry most of Line 5’s ...

Hancock canal-side development misguided Editor: I live at the paved end of Navy Street at the Portage condos. The trail behind those garages that merges with pavement west past the hockey player's bnb house has been a respite summer, winter, spring and fall for scores of dog walkers, geriatric skiers, snow shoers, bikers, pedestrian commuters, parents, kids and ordinary walkers from the increasing speed-breaking traffic and rough pedestrian walkways we have in Hancock. Reflection on a stranger’s remark Editor: Last October 18th, I participated with over 800 other local people in the second “No Kings” demonstration on the Portage Bridge. I carried a sign that said, among other things, “No Dictators”. As I was walking back across the bridge, a young man walking in the other direction said to me as he passed - “A dictator would kill you!” - I didn’t respond and kept walking. I’m not sure what he intended by the statement, may be just to “own me” or that no simple sign would provide protection from a dictator. I kept turning ...

The Continuing SAGA of Navy Street Editor: As some of you may know, the push by the City of Hancock to build the extension of Navy Street behind the Portage Lake Condo Association continues but this time with a timeline—bids let out in the spring and construction to being this summer and completed in 2027. The PLCA opposes the construction of an extension of Navy Street on the City of Hancock Easement behind our garages because of the following issues: 1. U.S. invokes freedom, ignoring its history in Iran To the editor: The United States and Israel have launched airstrikes on Iran, reportedly to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons. President Trump asserted in his statement on the attacks: "(T)o the great proud people of Iran, I say tonight that the hour of your freedom is at hand. Stay sheltered.... When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations."
