To the editor: And so it’s that time again – time to get the boat in the water for the first long weekend of summer; time to get out the barbecue and cook up hamburgers and drink some soda; time for the big sales, vacations and other activities. Keep our local highways clean

Letter to the editor: Recently, several members of the Range Lions and their spouses cleaned our “Adopt a Highway” stretch from Painesdale to South Range. We were all disturbed by the amount of litter along that three mile stretch of highway. We collected 34 bags of litter. Many other organizations in our area volunteer their time to keep our beautiful communities clean through the “Adopt a Highway” program. To the editor: Hi, we are Siona Beaudoin, Beau Hakala, and Gabriel Poirier and we were part of the Lake Linden-Hubbell eCybermission team, and we are writing to express our gratitude for the generous donation from an anonymous donor. In seventh grade we competed in the Midwest regional competition, in eighth grade we won first place at the national level and traveled to Washington D.C., and in ninth grade we received a $5,000 STEM-in-action grant to continue work in community outreach. To the editor: Thank you to the Portage Health Auxiliary for supporting our upcoming Rabbit Island School program for the 2021 year. Rabbit Island School is a student-led arts and ecology expedition for area teens. Students selected for participation will spend 7 days on the island, creating art, studying the ecology of the island, learning how to fish, prepare meals and so much more. A $2,000 grant from the Portage Health Auxiliary helps ensure we can provide necessary island camping materials to students, provide stipends to artist mentors that oversee the program, and purchase art ...

Bogus charge in Torch Lake

Dear Editor: This letter is to address the service charge of $7 assessed on the bills attributed to the Torch Lake Sewer Authority and collected by Munibilling Utility Solutions from Greensboro, NC. I contacted Munibilling and asked why only Hubbell and people served by Michigan-American Water Co. as assessed and not people on the system in Schoolcraft Township since they pay their bill to the Lake Linden Village without the $7 added. New CDC mask guidance

To the editor: The CDC’s new COVID-19 mask guidance is a great idea, or would be if people were honest about whether they are fully-vaccinated. But we all know that many of them will not be. A good indicator of how conscientious the unvaccinated are about wearing masks might be to compare the percentage of people you see indoors in places open to the public (like stores) to the percentage of unvaccinated adults in Houghton County. About 60% of adults in Houghton County have not been fully vaccinated, so at least 60% of the people you see in public indoor settings should be wearing ...
