Jets boys, Gremlins girls cross country teams open season with win in Painesale

PAINESDALE — Despite the Houghton Gremlins junior Brandon Van Karsen finishing as the top male runner, the Jeffers Jets boys won the season-opening cross country race at the Kilpela Farm Wednesday. On the girls’ side, Houghton had two top finishers in junior Holly Cooke and sophomore Brooke Hoppe, and they used those finishes to earn the top team spot. Jeffers boys scored a 29, which was five points better than Houghton. Van Karsen set the fastest pace of the race, and he finished the course with a time of 18.08.4. Gremlins roll over Modeltowners

GWINN — The Houghton Gremlins volleyball team traveled to Gwinn Wednesday and defeated the host Modeltowners in three sets, 25-14, 25-8, and 25-19. Lydia Williams led the Gremlins’ offense with eight kills and 10 digs. Annika Henquinet followed with six kills and 13 digs. Also of note where Alyssa Northey, who had 24 assists, 15 digs, and two aces, and Katia Rudak, who had 16 digs and a pair of aces as well.

Olympic champion Alysa Liu takes season off after Milan gold, promises her return to the ice

Olympic figure skating champion Alysa Liu is taking the season off following her triumph in Milan. This time, she is certain she will be back. The 21-year-old from the San Francisco Bay area made history in February when she became the first American woman since Sarah Hughes in 2002 to stand atop the podium at the Winter Games.
