Events and opportunities

December 5

• Winter Wonderland 5 – 8 p.m. Houghton downtown pier. This annual event will feature a variety of family-friendly activities designed to capture the spirit of the season. Santa Claus will greet children, with a mailbox for letters to the North Pole. Sleigh rides will be offered Elsa, Anna, and Olaf are making a frosty appearance straight from Arendelle. The Portage Lake District Library will be buzzing with holiday crafts, storytime, and winter-themed fun. Bundle up, enjoy a cup of cocoa, and bring the whole family.

• Neighbors Table Community Meal, 5:30 – 7 p.m. Faith Lutheran Church, Calumet. Takeouts available between 6:30 and 7 p.m.. All are welcome, at no charge.

• Calumet Christmas Tree Lighting, 6:30 p.m. Calumet Commons (across from Frozen Farms). There’ll be tree lighting, hot cocoa, cookie decorating, meet and greet with Santa and more.

December 6

• Holiday Craft Sale, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Copper Country Mall. The Daily Mining Gazette will host its craft and vendor show this Saturday at the Copper Country Mall from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The show will be comprised of 50 vendors who selling homemade items ranging from baked goods and condiments to apparel and decorative crafts.

• Food and coat drive, 10:30 a,m, – 2:30 p.m. Copper Country Mall. The Houghton High School alumni association will hold a non-perishable food and winter coat drive.  Will accept donations of non-perishables food items, cold weather jackets, coats, hats, gloves, mittens. The Salvation Army will be beneficiary of the food, St. Vincent de Paul’s the clothing. 

• L’Anse Cookie Walk, doors open at 10 a.m. Mix and match, choose your favorite cookies by the pound, plus breads and candy. L’Anse United Methodist Church, Main and Mesnard, L’Anse

December 12

• The National Honor Society at Houghton High School will host a blood drive from noon to 3 p.m. at the High School between the High School and Middle School gyms. Those interested in donating should enter through Door 1, or the big glass entrance, located at the front of the school building. Snacks and beverages will be provided for those donating.

December 13

• Wilderness Walk, 3 p.m. Special Advent Celebration. Meet at Calumet Township Park. Walk less than 400 yards to Sarah Green’s barn.

Music offered by Charles Murphy. The Wilderness Walks are opportunities to connect with God and each other in an outdoor natural setting. Each walk has a leader who will guide the walk and stop along the way for readings and reflection. The walks are appropriate for all ages including families and children. Everyone is welcome, no religious affiliation is necessary.

December 20

• KNHP Open House, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Looking for something festive? The Keweenaw National Historical Park’s Calumet Visitor Center (98 5th St, Calumet) has something for you! Step into historical holiday cheer at the Holiday Open House. You’ll have the opportunity to engage in make-and-take holiday crafts inspired by 150 years of seasonal traditions. Three floors of interactive exhibits for all ages are open for exploration as well. Be sure to catch the Village of Calumet Sesquicentennial Exhibition on the third floor before it’s gone!
