Triathlon to wrap up winter March 26

HOUGHTON — Spring may be approaching, but people will still have one last chance to break out their winter gear for a fun competition.

The Winter Wrap-Up Triathlon will be held March 26 at the Michigan Tech Trails. Contestants will meet at the softball field entrance for a triathlon of skiing, biking and running.

“It’s to have fun, and to wrap up winter,” said organizer Mary Kaminski. “To continue to keep people active in the outdoors, the reasons why we live here.”

The triathlon will lead off with 5.4 kilometers on the Isle Royale and Superior loops. Contestants must wear helmets for the 10.8-kilometer bike portion.

Winter triathlons have been held internationally since 1997. For the sake of the trails, the events will be held in reverse order.

“If we were to actually run first, then bike, then ski, the trails are going to be completely beat up for the ski portion,” Kaminski said.

For the running portion, the Team USA website recommends trail shoes, cross country spikes or racing flats equipped with one-eighth of an inch sheet metal screws. For cycling, it recommends any mountain bike with large width tires — at least 2 inches, and 2.2 to 2.4 inches recommended — and aggressive tread. Tire pressure should be relatively low, between 10-20 psi.

Despite warming temperatures, Kaminski’s been told there should still be plenty of snow on the trails by the time of the triathlon.

Race check-in is 8 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. They will start at 9 a.m. Entrants will pay $20 cash at registration.

People must preregister by 5 p.m. March 24. They can go to cityofhoughton.com or call 906-482-2422.

Medals will be given to the top three male and female finishers.
