HOUGHTON – The Portage Lake District Library (PLDL) announced Encouraging Every Child’s Reading Journey, scheduled for 5:30 – 7 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at the PLDL.
The free event is designed specifically for parents and caregivers of elementary-age children.
“We created this space for parents who want to help but aren’t sure how,” said PLDL Program Coordinator Asako Nakamura. “From choosing books that actually click with your child to making time for reading in a busy family schedule, our goal is to make literacy feel doable–and even fun.”
The event begins with a panel discussion featuring local reading specialists, followed by breakout table conversations where families can ask questions and get personalized advice.
Common Questions addressed by the panelists are:
• How do I find books my child will actually enjoy?
• Is it okay if they only read graphic novels?
• What if my child is a reluctant or struggling reader?
The panel of is composed of local educators, literacy professionals, and a children’s book author–followed by breakout sessions where parents can ask one-on-one questions about their child’s specific reading challenges.
PLDL Library Director Katrina Linde-Moriarty said the goal of the event is to demystify the reading journey and allow people to ask questions and become engaged.”We want to prepare parents and grandparents and those who work with youth in our area for that summer reading push,’ Linde-Moriarty said.
Panelists include an elementary library teacher, two literacy professionals along with a mental health specialist with the Copper Country Intermediate School District, a local Title I teacher and a children’s book author.
“We want to explore different strategies around reading.” Linde-Moriarty said. “It’s something that every teacher asks the kids to work on and we want to work to provide an opportunity to learn about leading up through that process. You know, what do you do with a reluctant reader who only likes graphic novels? How do you bridge those gaps and keep reading interesting, fun, and engaging”
This event leads into the PLDL Summer Reading Program, which kicks off on June 14 – the same day as Bridgefest — with a party from Noon to 2 p.m. The party includes a scavenger hunt, crafts, games, popcicles, and more.
The Summer Reading Program runs from June 14 to Aug. 23 and is open to readers of all ages.
