Zombie run is healthy fun — if you survive

L’ANSE – Drizzly weather may have slowed participation, but survivors of Thursday’s second Zombie Run/Walk 5K on the L’Anse School Trail had a good time regardless.

“I heard some good screams,” said Kim LaBerge of Baraga County Memorial Hospital, the event’s sponsor.

The event is an untimed fun run, LaBerge explained. Runners or walkers were given three flags, as in flag football, and asked to walk or run two laps through the school forest trail. Zombies were hidden along the way to scare them, chase them and attempt to grab the flags. If runners lost all three flags, they become an official zombie themselves, though they were still allowed to complete the run.

An earlier 1-mile Monster run for youth 12 and under preceded the main event.

Brook Thomas, a junior at L’Anse Jr/Sr High School, said it was even more fun to be a zombie than a runner.

“I scared a kid, and he almost fell on his butt running backward,” she said.
