A call for UP Power

MARQUETTE – The city of Marquette’s Lakeview Arena has advanced to the final two ice rinks in the annual Kraft Hockeyville USA competition, securing at least $75,000 toward arena upgrades.

Through community-wide online voting efforts, Lakeview Arena beat the Twin Ponds Family Complex in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to emerge as winner of the East region finals.

The East and West region winners will compete for the grand prize of $150,000 in arena upgrades and hosting a televised 2016-17 NHL pre-season game. The West winner is the Rushmore Thunderdome in Rapid City, South Dakota

The next round of voting kicks off Monday. To vote, visit krafthockeyville.com. Once registered, an individual can vote up to 50 times per day.

The grand prize winner will be announced at the end of the month.

Andrew MacIver, parks and recreation coordinator for Marquette, said in a previous interview that the city would likely prioritize energy efficiency updates at Lakeview Arena with the prize money.

Last year, Sault Ste. Marie’s Pullar Stadium received $40,000 for making it to the top four, while the grand prize was awarded to Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Lakeview is a venue for youth and adult hockey leagues, figuring skating and a wide variety of community events.
