June CCISD Board meeting

The Copper Country Intermediate School District Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting in person on Tuesday, June 16.

Due to the pandemic, the Copper Country Association of School Boards could not give out their awards at the usual Spring Ceremony. At last night’s Copper Country ISD Board meeting, the board handed out its three awards.

The first award was for Student Leadership. This award went to Katie Jaszczak, a 2 year CTE student in Health Careers and Certified Nursing Assistant. Katie received a $500 scholarship from the National Youth Safety Essay Scholarship Contest. Katie’s CTE teachers described her as dedicated, deserving and hardworking.

The second award went to Katrina Carlson, the CCISD Special Education Supervisor. Ms. Carlson is responsible for 40 staff and 92 students. She has to supervise classrooms at the CCISD learning Center, classrooms in Hancock Public Schools, a classroom in Houghton and a classroom in Baraga. Ms. Carlson must help problem solve issues every day to help staff provide all the necessary supports to help each student reach their goals. It is because of her dedication to staff and students, along with the countless hours that she puts in, that Katrina Carlson was awarded the Outstanding Educational Employee Award.

The final award is a School Service Award, which went to the Hancock Police Department and Chief Butler. The Hancock Police Officers have visited the CCISD Learning Center Programs in a proactive way, building relationships with students and teaching that the Police are community helpers. The response from students was very positive, and one Mom reported that her son is no longer afraid of the Police.

Stockero informed the board that he expects the state to have a return to school plan by July 1. There are many groups involved, from MDE, DHHS and the newly formed “Return to Learn Commission.”

In other action, the Board:

 Approve 2019-2020 Revised Budget

 Adopt 2020-2021 Budget Resolution

 Set Date for July 2020 Organizational Meeting

 Hire Mental Health Professional, Jennifer Harris

 Hire Speech Language Pathologist, Sarah Bodine
