Little Brothers announces its annual Food Drive

HANCOCK — Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly announced it is partnering the with Lambda Chi fraternity again for their annual food drive. The food drive will be Saturday, Nov. 7. The food drive is a tradition more than 20 years old.

People wishing to donate, and living in a line between Chassell and Painesdale, and north to Fulton-Mohawk area, can leave a bag of non-perishable food on their doorstep or by their mailbox, and Lambda Chi fraternity members will pick it up on that day.

The goal of the food drive, said Little Brothers, is to collect a minimum of 7,000 pounds of food, which is just over half of what the organization needs for the year for their monthly food bags.

“Each year, we distribute more than 12,000 lbs of food to low income elders in our community,” said Cathy Kass-Alten, executive director of Little Brothers. “The monthly bags are personalized and delivered to any homebound elders.”

Little Brothers administrators said bags with specific flyers will be distributed in those areas, but people may use their own bags, marked for Little Brothers, or they can drop off their food at Little Brothers’ office at 527 Hancock Street in Hancock, any time in the next couple of weeks.

Lambda Chi Alpha assists in the collection as part of their national organization’s North American Food Drive.

Non-perishable food items are accepted at Little Brothers year-round for its food pantry. The donations are a way to offset the food insecurity of community members 60 years or older. Contents of the bag are individualized, so each member only gets what they need and want.

“Please help stock Little Brothers Food Pantry on Nov. 7,” said Program Director Gail Ross.

Starting at $3.50/week.
