South Range 4th of July Committee seeks volunteers

Candace Wolf/Daily Mining Gazette Signs display several events of interest for visitors to South Range for the Fourth of July. The Fourth of July Committee is still in need of helping hands to ensure the celebration upholds its stellar reputation.

SOUTH RANGE — The Fourth of July Committee is a dedicated group that does not rest. The committee began planning of this year’s event schedule more than 10 months ago, said Mike Renier, committee chairman. In fact, Renier had voiced his intention of stepping down more than a year ago, but has signed on for another year, just one example of the dedication of the committee members.

The committee’s diligence has made South Range a premier celebration destination for people from all across the western Upper Peninsula for decades. But in spite of the efforts of the committee to repeat its popular celebrations, there is not much it can do without public support. Its social media page contains an introduction that reads:

“If you are willing to help out with keeping the 4th of July going in South Range, let us know! Any & all.”

Renier said one of the appeals the committee is making to the public is for parade floats of organizations, businesses, or individuals — just about anyone who would like to have a float in a parade.

Floats are not the only thing the committee needs assistance with. Another is cash donations, especially for its legendary fireworks display.

Although the planning committee conducts several fundraising events throughout the year, the proceeds this year have not equaled the costs of putting on the event.

“The fireworks this year cost $11,000,” he said. “So, we are still looking for donations.”

The cost of everything has gone up, he said. Fireworks have increased from 5 – 10%, he said, most of which is due to transportation costs.

The committee is also selling 4,000 raffle tickets at $1 apiece, Renier said, which will help to support the fireworks and the music.

This year, SuperSuits, a popular local band, is scedule to perform
