Babcock: Former Finlandia buildings attracting interest
HANCOCK — Potential buyers are already showing interest in three Finlandia buildings being purchased by Hancock.
The city council approved purchasing Nikander, Mannerheim and Wargelin halls for a combined $30,000 last week.
“I’ll be showing them for the fifth time on Wednesday, so hopefully something will happen and somebody will take on one of these,” City Manager Mary Babcock said at Wednesday’s City Council meeting.
So far Wargelin has been winterized, including the boiler, Babcock said. Crews are working on the other two buildings.
The Planning Commission also approved a letter of support for the city’s application for a Rural Readiness Grant from the state. The $50,000 grant would go towards creating a feasibility study for the three Finlandia buildings the city purchased, plus Paavo Nurmi and Finlandia Hall. Hancock would use the study to prepare a plan for development and reuse of the buildings.
“When developers come in, they can get a feel for what it could possibly be used for,” Babcock said.
The study would either be done by OHM or by Progressive AE, which is putting together the city’s master plan update, Babcock said.
“It’s really important that they know our community when they’re doing a feasibility study,” she said.
