HOUGHTON - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will conduct inspections on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock this week, requiring bridge lifts. According to a release from the Michigan Department of Transportation, the various test lifts will be performed at night, from 7 p.m. to midnight on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Jail Committee meeting will be held in the Conference Room on the 5th floor of the Houghton County Courthouse, 401 E. Houghton Avenue, Houghton Monday, December 8, 2025 at 4:00 p.m. According to a release from County Clerk Jennifer Kelly, a Microsoft Teams has been set up for those who cannot attend in person. A meeting agenda will be posted soon on the county website under "Jail Committee," shortly.
In brief
The Carnegie Museum's building will be closed for construction until Tuesday Dec. 9. The building will be closed while they modernize its 1908 water closet. While the building is closed, staff will still be working, so look for information coming soon to reserve your gingerbread kits. Thank you to the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission for a grant and to the City of Houghton DPW for the labor. The museum will reopen in time for its Annual Holiday Open House, 1 - 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13.
