“What If I Sneeze Outside?” UPEC hosts livestream discussion COVID-responsible outdoor recreation

Join the Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition (UPEC) livestream on Saturday, May 30, at 7 p.m. to hear Conan Smith, head of the Michigan Environmental Council, discuss the work of a statewide outdoor recreation workgroup to develop recommendations for Governor Whitmer and state agencies for a systematic, phased reopening of outdoor recreation activities and facilities to safeguard people from infection by COVID-19. UPEC was one of several UP organizations that participated in the workgroup. This will be UPEC’s third virtual information program of the Covid season.

In a wide-ranging interview, Smith will discuss what recommendations the workgroup has come up with, as well as some of the implications-over both the short and long term-of how the pandemic will change outdoor recreation in Michigan. We’ll also be checking out the action in the Lower Peninsula in terms of Covid-responsible recreation.

Conan Smith was named CEO of the Michigan Environmental Council in 2019. Prior to taking the helm at the Council, which is the primary coalition of the state’s environmental groups, Smith served for 12 years as executive director of Metro Matters, a southeast Michigan nonprofit, and for 14 years as an elected county commissioner.
