Editor: I am an educator and firmly believe that effective public schools that provide our students with a great education and learning opportunities are vital to sustaining a high quality of life and the economic viability of our communities. So, it troubles me a bit to write a letter to the editor urging the residents of Houghton, Keweenaw, and Baraga counties to vote "NO" on the millage proposal put forth by the Copper Country Intermediate School District (ISD). Voting NO on the Copper Shores Millage Editor: With the August 5th election drawing closer, please take some issues into consideration in regards to the Copper Shores Elder Nutrition Millage. Copper Shores was just awarded $20 million from our attorney general, add that to the approximate $70 million they had in the bank, and it's close to $90 million they have. They are remodeling/building a new $2,100,000 building in Hancock. The CEO gets $150,000 a year. Vote Yes for a Safe Jail I am a voter and taxpayer in Houghton County but have lived other places and have experience related to local county jails. Years ago, I was asked to work at a local jail one day a week to substitute for the usual worker. I was a little afraid to work there, my idea of inmates coming from Law and Order and other television shows. The experience proved different. The prisoners were my clients, or my neighbor’s kids who had made bad decisions. There are many jail employees. They work for the county, as correction officers, janitors, cooks, health care ...

Editor: Our 20th Annual Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club Kids Fishing Derby held on July 19th at the Swedetown Pond brought in a lot of kids and fish! 208 kids enjoyed catching hundreds of fish with a free hot dog lunch when the fishing ended. Prizes were awarded to the largest Bluegill, Perch, Bullhead and the smallest fish in separate categories for boys and girls. With the largest fish a 9-1/4” Perch. To the Editor, As voters in Houghton County are asked to approve a new 1-mill property tax for the Copper Shores Meals on Wheels program, we must ask ourselves a critical question: is this millage truly necessary, or is it a matter of convenience for a foundation with vast resources? I have serious doubts. Copper Shores Community Health Foundation is sitting on an endowment of nearly $80 million.
