Winter Fun thanks

To the editor: We want to express our great appreciation for all those involved in our recent Winter Fun Day. There are many to thank and initially, the DNR who was so kind to let us close the trail for the racers. Ryan LaPorte, president of the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club was instrumental in making this happen and Mike Fig provided a perfectly groomed palette. Eric Waara and the city of Houghton went beyond normal requests to accommodate this event with set up and prizes. People act on feelings

To the editor: In response to the letter titled “Making better choices:” Human beings almost always have to justify their bad choices; it’s easier to blame someone else or something else than to face the truth. What the author said about some of the chemicals we put in our bodies today may be true and should be studied by doctors to avoid any mental and physical problems in children and adults later in life. Freedom and trust

To the editor: We have used our freedom to separate ourselves into political groups, and we have allowed our differences to become so great that we no longer trust each other. It seems we are standing on opposite shores. Will we swim the gap? Some will trust the water, others will need life jackets, but the important thing is to realize we need to reconnect, for the good of our country and our hearts. Freedom is a value, one among many. To the editor: Does anyone think a seaplane charter business should be allowed to locate next to a nature preserve, an active bald eagle nest and a quiet residential neighborhood? Well, it appears that Portage Township officials are on a path to let Jon Rector relocate his business, Isle Royale Seaplanes, to the former Onigaming site. Competition is not always good

To the editor: People routinely turn everyday events into competitive sports. From skipping rocks, to flipping coins, to betting on anything that moves, we just can’t resist seeing the world as one big competition. Humans have compulsively created what came to be competing warring religions, polarized political parties, narrowly defined gender roles, imaginary inferior races, enemy nations, entitled tribes, and a few spectacularly losing sports teams (Go Lions).
