HOUGHTON — From the opening drive to the closing minute, the Ferris State was in control.

The No. 2 Bulldogs (9-0, 7-0 GLIAC) shut down Michigan Tech 52-0 in the snowy matchup.

The Michigan Tech Huskies (4-4, 2-4 GLIAC) never found a rhythm offensively, while Ferris State’s offense seemed only to be stopped when it scored touchdowns.

The Bulldogs piled on 615 yards of total offense. Michigan Tech had just 120 yards. The Huskies were 3 for 15 on third-down conversions.

“Ferris State is a very good team,” said MTU head coach Steve Olson. They are big and fast. They are guys who can make plays and we saw that today.”

Ferris State’s first big play came at the end of their first drive of 83-yards. Bulldog quarterback Travis Russell snuck it past the goal line with a 1-yard run at the 10:55 mark in the first quarter.

Less then five minutes later, Alex Thomas intercepted a pass from MTU quarterback Steele Fortress and took in for six points. After the first 15 minutes of play, the Bulldogs led 14-0.

The Huskies’ offensive struggles pervaded throughout the day. They were repeatedly stopped at the line of scrimmage by a big Ferris State line.

“I was disappointed in our execution on both sides of the ball,” Olson said. “We weren’t sharp. We have a lot of things we need to improve on.”

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs tacked on 10 more points. This included a 78-yard touchdown pass from Russell to receiver Xavier Wade at the 13:44 mark. That was followed by a 32-yard field goal by their kicker Jackson Dieterle to put the score at 24-0 at halftime.

The second half looked a lot like the first as the Bulldogs continued to score big. Running back Marvin Campbell started the third quarter off with a 73-yard touchdown pass from Russell. Tyler Minor added another six at the 6:45 mark in the third.

Ferris State tacked on 14 more points in the last quarter including a 34-yard pass from quarterback Evan Cummins to Taylor McKinney Cole at the 6:13 mark.

The Huskies have two games left. They will face Wayne State on the road on Nov. 9 and close the season at home the week after against Northwood.
