Lions host Albion with snowy weather in forecast

HANCOCK — While another cold and snowy weekend appears to be in the offing, the Finlandia University football team isn’t overly concerned about it.

The Lions (0-8, 0-5) host rugged Albion College (6-2, 3-2) Saturday in their home finale.

FU coach Travis Wiltzius said his team is taking a philosophical approach to predictions of foul weather at McAfee Field for the 1 p.m. MIAA contest.

“When you’re located up here, you have to live with the weather,” Wiltzius said. “We expect there will be snow on the field and it will be cold. It is what it is.”

In last week’s 48-24 loss to Adrian, several Finlandia players had strong performances.

Freshman tailback DJ Davis had a season-best three touchdowns on the ground and totaled 136 yards rushing.

“(Davis) was running very hard, he had a great day,” Wiltzius said.

Freshman quarterback Darin Johnson also did well by passing for 245 yards on 19-of-30 passes.

“Darin Johnson is a competitor and he’s always play hard,” Wiltzius said. “That’s our philosophy … to keep playing hard.”

Tight end Bryce Beauchaine was also productive with five receptions for 69 yards. Kenny Kujawa snagged seven passes for 106 yards and continues to lead the Lions in that department.

But Wiltzius is aware that Albion is a formidable test.

“Albion is a fine football team,” he said. “They can attack you on the ground and through the air.”

The Lions have had a nationally ranked pass defense most of the season, allowing less than 100 yards a game.

The Britons possess one of the top receivers in the MIAA in flanker Justin Thomas, who already has caught 14 touchdowns.

Sophomore quarterback Jack Bush is a versatile quarterback and showed multiple skills in last week’s 24-14 victory over Trine University.

Tailback Markell McCoy averages nearly 100 yards rushing and is a home rum threat for the Britons.

Leading the defensive charge for the Lions is Christian Creten, who leads the team with 91 tackles.

Freshman linebacker Dave Carlson and Marvin Anthony are other keys on defense for the Lions.
