Calumet finishes 2nd in Suttons Bay Invite; Houghton takes 5th

SUTTONS BAY — The Calumet Copper Kings earned runner-up honors in the Gold Bracket at the 14-team Suttons Bay Invite Saturday.

Calumet fell to Kingsley in the championship match 21-25, 20-25.

The Copper Kings were undefeated prior to the matchup with Kingsley, defeating Suttons Bay (25-2, 25-13, 25-6), Onekama (25-17, 25-15, 25-11), Grand Traverse Academy (25-18, 25-14) and Bellaire (25-15, 25-8).

Lea Bjorn paced Calumet with 61 kills, six aces and 38 digs; Amber Johnson chipped in with 83 digs and 11 aces; Molly Larson recorded 16 kills and four aces; Celia Kiilunen had 16 kills and 10 aces; Brea Johnson finished with 51 assists, three aces and 25 digs; and Niina Anderson tallied 34 assists, 11 aces and 22 digs.

The Houghton Gremlins (22-9-4)went 2-2 and took home fifth. Houghton lost to Glen Lake (23-25, 25-20, 5-15) before defeating Charlevoix (25-10, 25-11) and Benzie Central (26-24, 25-19). Following pool play, the Gremlins lost in three sets to Bellaire (23-25, 25-11, 7-15).

For Houghton, Kendra Monette had 30 kills, six aces and 19 digs; Jada Markham added 12 kills and seven block kills; Kiley Farrey added 10 kills and 11 digs; Mackenzie Klein dished out 46 assists and four aces; Madi Dillinger tallied 35 digs; and Frankie Stukel had 12 digs.

Next, Calumet hosts Negaunee on Tuesday, while Houghton heads to L’Anse on the same day.
