Girls roundup: Chassell, Ontonagon win, setting up a conference showdown on Tuesday

LAKE LINDEN — Milly Allen scored 26 points and Sydney Danison recorded a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Chassell Panthers to a 54-29 Copper Country conference win over the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes Friday in Lake Linden.

The Panthers jumped out to a 20-5 lead after the first quarter and cruised from that point going forward.

“Chassell had too many weapons and we just don’t match up well with the combination of height and their guards,” LL-H coach Maureen Schick said. “Considering this was our third game in four days, I was pleased. We had many opportunities but still haven’t learned to convert.”

Erin Seppala led the Lakes (2-4, 2-3) with 10 points.

Next, LL-H goes to Baraga on Tuesday, while Chassell (3-1, 3-0) hosts Ontonagon on the same day.

ONTONAGON — Ontonagon improved to 4-0 with a 58-32 Copper Mountain Conference victory over Dollar Bay Friday night.

“By far this has been our best offensive output for sure,” Ontonagon coach Dick Franti said. “We’ve been struggling to get in the 40s, so 58 is a good output.”

Teddy Menigoz led Ontonagon with 18 points – including 16 in the second half – and Fahren Klopack scored 16.

“I thought Teddy Menigoz had a good shooting night. I thought Fahren had probably her best effort so far,” Franti said.

Ontonagon (4-0, 4-0) goes to conference favorite Chassell Tuesday night.

“We’re find to find out where we stand in that situation,” Franti said.

Dollar Bay (0-4, 0-2) goes to Baraga on Thursday.

L’ANSE — With the team’s offense floundering, L’Anse coach Scott Lloyd decided to turn up the defensive pressure to create better offense. The strategy paid off, and L’Anse earned a 51-40 nonconference win over the Baraga Vikings Friday in L’Anse.

The Purple Hornets trailed 23-15 at halftime. Before the fourth quarter, Lloyd had his team run a full-court man defense to speed up the Vikings. L’Anse outscored Baraga 19-6 in the fourth quarter to turn the game around.

“L’Anse turned up their pressure and we were not able to respond,” Baraga coach Tom Goodreau said.

L’Anse outscored its first-half point total by scoring 17 points in the third to trim the deficit to 34-32 as the Purple Hornets struggled on offense.

“We just couldn’t make a basket,” Lloyd said. “If we stood on the shoreline, we couldn’t throw a rock in the ocean. We missed layups, 3-footers, 6-footers. We generally are an above average shooting team. Since we weren’t making shots, they collapsed the zone and sat back and watched us clang it off the rim.”

Sara Dix led L’Anse with 14 points, and Taylor Brown added 13 points. For Baraga, Chelsea Pittsley led the way with 15 points, while Jaylyne Lindemann added 11.

Next, Baraga (0-5) heads to Lake Linden-Hubbell on Tuesday. L’Anse (4-1) heads to Houghton on the same day.
