Houghton girls fall in final seconds of OT to Westwood

WESTWOOD — Westwood’s Madelyn Koski scored the game-winning layup in overtime to propel the Patriots to a 58-57 nonconference win over the Houghton Gremlins Wednesday in Westwood.

Koski led all scorers with 22 points.

“Our issue is boiling down to defense,” Houghton coach Julie Filpus said. “We have to have greater intensity on the defensive end and rebounding.”

With the game tied at 56 in the final seconds, an inadvertent buzzer during a loose ball resulted in a jump ball, giving Houghton possession. The Gremlins’ Kendra Monette was fouled and sank one of two free throws for a 57-56 lead. That’s when Koski answered with a layup with two seconds remaining in overtime to give the Patriots (5-2) the go-ahead score.

Following a timeout, Houghton was not able to get the shot it wanted for the game-winner.

For Houghton, Monette and Cassie Ryynanen each scored 14 points, while Harlee Froberg and Kara Pietila each added 12 points.

“Scoring-wise, I thought our offense was in synch better,” Filpus said. “We just have to set our focus to locking down our opponents.”

Next, Houghton (3-3) goes to Lake Linden-Hubbell on Jan. 5.
