Bulldogs swept on road by Rapid River Friday

RAPID RIVER — The Rapid River softball team did a little bit of everything here Friday, sweeping Hancock 10-0 and 15-5 on a cold and windy afternoon.

Natalie Belanger was dominant on the mound for the Rockets in the opener, throwing six innings of one-hit ball while striking out 17.

“She was working her rise(ball) quite a bit that game and they seemed to be getting tangled up with it .. so we rode it for all it was worth and it worked out pretty well for us,” Rockets’ coach Tim Belanger said.

Kristen Goodacre led the offensive attack with two doubles and three RBIs.

Marina Kero had the lone hit for the Bulldogs (3-4) on a bloop single to centerfield in the sixth inning, ruining Belanger’s shot at a perfect game. Delaney Heinonen got the start for Hancock, giving up 10 runs through six innings.

“Their pitcher was awesome. We didn’t touch her,” Bulldogs’ coach Randy Heinonen said. “I thought our pitcher was good too. We let her down defensively, which has been the story of our season. We were out of that game early.”

The Rockets blew the second game open with five runs in the fourth to extend a 4-3 lead into a 9-3 lead, helped by multiple defensive errors from Hancock. They then ended it with six runs in the fifth, capped by a walk-off RBI triple to right field by Ellie Moberg to score Riley Edwardsen.

“I was happy with the girls .. they didn’t lose enthusiasm and stayed up. They got it done,” coach Belanger said. “Hancock .. every time we play them they’re getting better. Their program is really coming around.”

The Rockets (8-4) scored the first two runs of the nightcap before the Bulldogs pushed one across for their first run of the day on a RBI single by Emily Scholie that plated Emma Almquist in the top of the second.

However, the Rockets quickly responded in their half of the inning on a two-run single by Goodacre to score McKenzi Schram and Madi LaChance.

The Bulldogs got a couple back in the top of the fourth to trim their deficit to 4-3, but that’s as close they got.

After the Rockets scored five in the bottom half to make it 9-3, the Bulldogs added two more in the fifth on a two-run single by Peyton Dube to pull within 9-5.

“We hung in there better the second game, we’re just not making the plays defensively,” Coach Heinonen said. “We got a long way to go. I think this team could be a good team. I thought our pitchers did well, we just weren’t good enough defensively. We got some kids in who haven’t played a ton, so it helps them get some experience. The positive of coming down here is (Rockets’ coach) George (Kaynuh) is gracious enough to schedule us and it helps us get engaged with some good teams, and we appreciate it. We love to come here and play.”

Cecilia Pilon got the win on the mound, surrendering five runs (four earned) on five hits while striking out five and walking one through five innings. She also went 2-for-2 at the plate. Goodacre went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Moberg had three RBIs.

Dube took the loss, giving up 15 runs (13 earned) on 10 hits while walking six and striking out five. She also had two RBIs.

The Bulldogs host Westwood Monday, while the Rockets visit Manistique Wednesday.
