Nine locals to take part in All-Star game

MARQUETTE — On Saturday, eight high school football players who recently graduated from their schools will be competing in the U.P. Football All-Star Game at the Superior Dome in Marquette.

The game, which is slated to start at 1 p.m., features some of the top senior athletes from across the entire U.P.

Players were selected for the game with input from all U.P. high school coaches and U.P. sportswriters.

Suiting up for Team Red are Calumet’s Trevor Hendrickson, Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Kellen Klein, Calumet’s Brent Loukus, and Calumet’s Matt and Travis Ojala.

Team Black will feature Calumet’s Josh VanDenburg, Ontonagon’s Eddie Polakowski and Philip Voss and L’Anse’s Reese Waara.

Team Red will feature seven coaches, with three, including head coach Cody Kangas, from Manistique High School. Team Black will have nine coaches including five from Westwood High School and four from Ishpeming. Westwood head coach Scott Syrjala will serve in the same capacity for the contest.

Hendrickon earned his second football letter this past season while finishing with a 3.2 GPA.

Klein earned his fourth letter this past season and finished with a 4.0 GPA.

Loukus earned his second letter while finishing with a GPA of 3.91.

Matt Ojala earned his second letter while finishing with a 3.728 GPA.

Travis Ojala earned his third letter while finishing with a 3.1 GPA.

VanDenburg earned his second letter while finishing with a 3.364 GPA.

Polakowski earned his third letter while earning a 3.8 GPA.

Voss earned his fourth letter while finishing with a 3.0 GPA.

Waara earned a letter while finishing with a 2.5 GPA for the year.

Proceeds from the game will be donated to The Beacon House Food Pantry, the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame scholarship program, school lottery, practice jerseys for two schools, and new footballs will be donated to two schools.
