Prep Basketball: Blue Bolts beat Gladiators

DOLLAR BAY — With a two straight Class D regional titles and two straight trips to the state semifinals, the Dollar Bay-Tamarack City boys basketball team is well aware of the goal of its opponents.

And that was the case Friday night when the Ontonagon Gladiators came to town to test the Blue Bolts.

“Every team we play wants to beat us,” Bolts’ coach Jesse Kentala said after his team’s 68-50 win.

“We’re pretty used to having that target on our backs,

Kentala said. “But we welcome it … it tells us that we’re doing something right here.”

DB-TC was defensively sharp in the opening half last night, rolling up a 31-12 lead.

“I thought we did a great job of flustering them (Glads) in the first half,” Kentala said. “But then we absolutely lost our focus. That’s weird for this team, they’re usually right on focus.”

Ontonagon fought back in the second half, drawing to within nine points early in the fourth period at 50-41

“I thought the kids showed a lot of heart,” Ontonagon coach Brittany Turin-Jilbert said. “Dollar Bay is a real tough team to come back on because of their quickness, but we made a nice effort.”

In the end, it was the play of the Bolts’ 1-2 punch of senior forward Ashton Janke and junior guard Davin Hill that put the finishing touches on the team’s 15th win this season.

Janke nailed 14 points (12 of those coming on triples) while Hill added five points and his usual hustling defensive work in all in the final frame.

“Those two (Janke and Hill) are tough to stop,” Turin-JIlbert said. “If you stop one, the other is going to get you.”

Janke led all scorers with 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Hill accounted for 20 more points, five steals and nine assists in an all-around showing.

Al Datto, a sophomore, netted 11 points for the Blue Bolts.

Ontonagon was paced by sophomore Luke Strasser with 13 points and eight boards.

Logan Latvis and Luke Soumis each notched nine markers for the Glads.

Kentala noted that his squad needs to keep working in order to be ready for the tournaments.

“We know there are some tough games coming up. and we’re going to have to be ready. But we’re 15-0 right now and we’ll take that.”
