Tech’s Pietila, Swoyer get WCHA honors

He’s been making it look easy.

Michigan Tech sophomore goalie Blake Pietila was named the WCHA Goaltender of the Week for the second consecutive week.

Huskies junior defenseman Colin Swoyer was named the WCHA Defenseman of the Week. He had two assists in the Huskies’ 3-0 win on Sunday at Bemidji State.

Pietila earned a 31-save shutout in the Sunday win. The win came the day after Pietila entered in the second period of a 5-1 deficit. He stopped 10 shots in a 6-3 loss.

Pietila was named the conference Goaltender of the Week the previous week after a split against Minnesota State. In five games played, he has a 2-1 record with a 1.13 goals-against average and .967 save percentage.

Michigan Tech hosts Northern Michigan on Friday before visiting the Wildcats on Saturday in a nonconference series. The games will be Northern Michigan’s first of the season after cancellations each of the previous three weeks because of positive COVID-19 tests within the program.
