Serving propels Gladiators in sweeping Chassell, 3-0

CHASSELL — Strong serving was the key as Ontonagon swept Chassell on Tuesday.

The Gladiators won by scores of 25-10, 25 -19 and 25-10.

“This was a game of service runs,” Ontonagon head coach Kacie Lundin said.

The top-notch Gladiator service started in the first set. After a 2-2 tie and a 4 -6 deficit, Ontonagon’s Makenna Uotila turned it on and turned it up in the service department. She put together a run of seven to make the score 11- 6.

After Chassell got their seventh point, it was Alli Bobula’s turn to serve. She kept the Panthers idle with a run of six. The Gladiators went on to win 25-10.

The second set was Chassell’s best. After being the victim of a 5-1 service run from Ontonagon’s Kiirsa Kolpack, the bounced back to 10-14 game. With an ace from Panther’s Emma Goddard, the Panther’s tied it at 14 and again at 17. The rivals were even again at 19 before Uotila served up another six in a row for a 25-19 win.

“I was very pleased at how aggressive we were in that second set,” said Chassell head coach Kyra Pratley. “They didn’t give up. Their energy was up and the girls fought for every single point. I have been watching this team grow all season and I could not be prouder.”

The third set started out to a 4-2 lead by the Gladiators. That moved to a 13-7 tilt when Kolpack stepped up to serve. She put together an impressive run of 10 with a number of aces dealt throughout.

She led the team with 10 aces on the evening. Uotila notched seven kills as well.

The Gladiators closed the third set 25-10.

“I thought we move our feet a lot better than we have the rest of the season,” added Lundin after the win. “We’ve been focusing on limiting our errors, and instead making the other team make the mistakes. As well, we did a very good job of keeping the ball in play. These are all good things. We are peaking just at the right time.”
