Copper Kings can’t stem Ishpeming offense in DH loss

ISHPEMING — Ishpeming put up double-digit runs in both games of its home high school softball doubleheader against Calumet, culminating in 10-6 and 10-4 victories Friday afternoon.

Ishpeming scored runs in eight of 12 innings on the day. The Hematites found a different way to win each game. The Hematites jumped out to an 8-1 lead in Game 1, but Calumet crawled back to within 8-6  in the middle of the sixth inning.

Ishpeming then scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to hold on for dear life.

In Game 2, it was a 3-3 battle after three innings. Holding the Copper Kings down in the top half of the fourth, Ishpeming scored four runs in its half of the fourth and three more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

“We’ve had two games this year where we had big leads like 7-1 and 8-1, and we lost them,” Ishpeming coach Ben McGuire said of the first game. “One of them was (the first game Thursday) to Westwood, and today we didn’t. We didn’t fold, we just kept battling and making plays on defense, making pitches and did a good job. I’m really happy with that.”

Calumet got its offense going at game’s start with a leadoff double by Jana Loukus. After advancing to third due to an overthrow, Loukus scored on a sacrifice RBI from Ashlee Johnson.

Ishpeming came back in the bottom half of the opening inning, scoring three runs to begin a streak of eight consecutive runs. Hailey Hytinen drew a leadoff walk, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ella Luke. Calumet committed several crucial errors and miscues, which began in the first inning. The Pats’ next batter, Payton Manninen, was beaned, and a Maddy McNab liner to shortstop was dropped to load the bases.

It looked like the Copper Kings would get out of the inning after a strikeout for the second out and then a ground ball hit by Emily Morton to shortstop. But the throw was off and the bases cleared to put the Hematites in front 3-1.

The Hematites trotted three more runs across to go up 6-1 after two innings. Calumet pitcher Emily Peterson had a tough time finding the strike zone and walked five batters, including two with the bases loaded for runs. McNab knocked the other run in with an RBI single.

Ishpeming took advantage of Calumet’s errors with their small-ball game. A bunt advanced the runners with everybody safe in the third, and a missed tag loaded the bases. Leave it to Manninen to come to the plate and deliver with a two-run single to make it 8-1.

With four innings still left to play, there was enough game left for the Copper Kings to make a comeback. Slowly but surely, they did just that.

Three consecutive singles from Helen Beiring, Peterson and Kaylee Halonen loaded the bases with one out in the top half of the fourth. It was now Ishpeming’s turn to make a mistake with an errant throw to first base that would’ve finished an inning-ending double play as two runs scored instead.

Calumet added two more runs in the fifth to make it 8-5. Loukus’ bat came through again with an RBI single, and she scored the second run after advancing around the bases via Johnson and Beiring.

The Copper Kings’ rally wasn’t finished yet after a dropped fly ball in left field scored a run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-6. On top of the bats getting going for Calumet, Peterson also started to figure it out on the pitching rubber, shutting down the Hematites in the fourth and fifth.

“We had a bad first inning, then we had a little confusion on the strike zone with the umpire,” Calumet coach Joel Rastello said. “That cost us a couple runs, but we got that straightened out. Some of our best players made some boots (errors) that never happen, but everybody recovered and we battled back.”

During its offensive drought, Ishpeming went back to bunting. Morton beat out an infield single to lead off the inning, and Kadie Kaukola reached on a bunt to put runners on first and second. Kaitlyn VanDeuren placed another bunt down on the third-base line, and the throw to third base to get the lead runner was overthrown as both Morton and Kaukola scored to give the Hematites a four-run advantage.

“A couple of those bunts were spot on, they just stopped right there and were perfect,” McGuire said. “That’s what we want to do, is move the runners and force them to make errors. We wanted to put the ball in play and force them to make mistakes, and that’s the reason why we got two runs. It was awesome.”

In Game 2, Ishpeming’s first four hitters — Hytinen, Luke, Manninen and McNab — came through, scoring all 10 of their runs. McNab hit an RBI triple to score the first run, and an error scored McNab after Abby Koski put the ball in play. Calumet rallied to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the third when Loukus, Laura Giachino and Beiring all touched the plate.

McNab scored another run for the Hematites in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 3-2, and the Ishpeming bats started to come through once again in the fourth and fifth. All four of the top batters scored a run for Ishpeming in the fourth to put their team ahead 6-3, including consecutive RBI triples from Manninen and McNab.

Ishpeming’s three-run fifth was led by a solo home run by Hytinen, a double from Manninen, and a Calumet error that scored Manninen.

Both teams will be back in action at 4 p.m. today as Ishpeming plays at Gwinn and Calumet travels to Hancock.

Starting at $3.50/week.
