Windigo select first NAHL draft class
The Wisconsin Windigo selected Mario DiMaggio with its first-ever NAHL draft pick, at 38th overall, during the NAHL entry draft on Wednesday.
DiMaggio, of St. Louis, Missouri, is a 6-foot-1, 183-pound defenseman who played four games for Youngstown in the USHL last season.
The Windigo had nine picks in the first 11 rounds after trades made prior to the sale of the team, then known as the Minnesota Magicians.
The Windigo, coached by Houghton native and Michigan Tech alum Blake Hietala, also selected forwards Luke Levandowski and Callan Budinger at 118th and 126th overall.
Budinger, of DePere, Wisconsin, played for Team Wisconsin 18U AAA last season, and finished the year with the NAHL’s Jamestown Rebels.
“I am thrilled to be drafted by the Windigo,” Budinger said in a Windigo press release. “It’s an honor to have the opportunity to play in the NAHL in my home state. I can’t wait to hit the ice in the Dome.”
The Windigo selected defenseman Devin Nabozny, who was captain of Fox Motors 18U AAA last season, scoring 17 goals and 23 assists in 64 games.
In the seventh round, the Windigo selected chose goaltender Benjamin Behrens.
The Windigo’s eighth-, ninth- and tenth-round picks were Europeans: defenseman Albin Sibbesson of Sweden, Victor Widlund of Sweden, and Patrick Isiguzo of Finland.
“We feel good about the three Europeans we have taken in the draft,” Hietala said. “All are 20-year-olds who will bring experience and superb skills to our team.”
Wisconsin’s final draft pick was defenseman Charles Larsen.
The Windigo hold a tryout camp Aug. 4-7 in Anoka, Minn.
“We still have needs to address,” Hietala said. We had two great pre-draft camps over the last two weekends. We saw an exceptional level of competition at those camps. We will invite a number of those players to compete at our main camp for roster spots.”
The Windigo, owned by Copper Island Hockey Club, LLC, is an entity composed of a consortium of people with ties to the Copper Country.
