Finlandia gets Blue Deviled on road

MENOMONIE, Wis. — The Finlandia University men’s basketball team (3-18) lost 92-60 to Wisconsin-Stout (5-14) 92-60, Saturday afternoon at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Wisconsin-Stout came out quick scoring the first seven points of the game. Finlandia was down 11, 20-9 at the 10:22 mark.

The Lions made a run and senior Danny Zuchak hit a 3-point play (bucket and free throw). That put it 22-16 Blue Devils, with 9:07 to go. Stout went on a 12-2 run to seal the game.

For Finlandia, junior Emmett Johnson had 13 points and was 6-of-10 from the floor.

For Wisconsin-Stout, George Scharlau had 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Lions falls short of clipping Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR — A furious rally fell short as the Lions lost 82-71 to Wisconsin-Superior (11-7) Friday night at Mertz Motorelli Gym.

Wisconsin-Superior led by seven, 19-12 at the 10:42 mark, before Finlandia began a charge. Sophomore Logan Depew knocked down a trey from the stratosphere. That ended a 10-2 run to put the Lions up 22-21 with 7:38 to go.

The lead went back-and-forth until there was five minutes left in the first half. From that point, the Yellowjackets had a lead of five or more points for the next 16 minutes.

Down 67-49 with 10:57 left, FinnU began to storm back. Finlandia knocked down four triples with three from freshman Connor Smale.

Junior Emmett Johnson hit a twisting lay-up with 4:45 left to end a 19-4 run, making it 71-68, UW-Superior. The Yellowjackets then scored six straight points to seal the game.

For Finlandia, Johnson had 14 points with four 3-pointers, junior Octavius Johnson had 13 points and eight rebounds and Smale scored 12 points with four treys.

For Wisconsin-Superior, T.J. Moberg scored 19 points and Josef Fahrenholtz had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Up next

Finlandia closes out the home season, Thursday, Feb. 2, against Gogebic. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
