UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — The Michigan Tech soccer team saw its three-game win streak come to an end with a scoreless draw against Saginaw Valley State at the Robert C. Braddock Field on Friday afternoon.

“I felt that our team played shut down defense tonight knowing some of the offensive threats that SVSU has,” head coach Turk Ozturk said. “They are a talented group and are well coached. We had a few opportunities to get on the scoreboard but missed our chances.

“Overall, I’m happy with the result. We are still tied for first-place in the GLIAC and leave with the result. Now it’s time to recover, travel to Ferris State tomorrow and shift our focus on trying to get another road result before returning home.”

The Cardinals (3-2-2, 0-1-2 GLIAC) had five shots in the first half with shots on goal by Stephanie Strong and Sophia Zalucki to go with four corner kicks.

The Huskies (3-1-3, 2-0-1 GLIAC) countered with six shots in the first 45 minutes of action with Seulgi Lee accounting for the lone shot on goal.

Michigan Tech had an uncharacteristic game offensively being held to just one corner kick in the opening frame and two for the game.

The Huskies had momentum to start the second half, sending three shots at the Cardinal’s goal within the first 10 minutes of action with a shot on goal by Taylor Noble between two shots from freshman Brooke Green.

Michigan Tech and Saginaw Valley State would continue to trade shots and substitutions throughout the second half before weather stopped the contest twice within the final 16 minutes.

The two times traded last-chance efforts in the final frames with senior goalkeeper Gracie VanLangevelde making three stops in the last 10 minutes.

Offensively, Molly Bolang and Ella Roach had chances at the net before being stopped by the Cardinals goalkeeper Lainey Garbarz.

Both Roach’s and SVSU’s Alex Richardson’s goal chances happened in the last two minutes of regulation.

The Cardinals outshot the Huskies 16-15 with an edge of 5-4 in shots on goal. SVSU took away the Huskies’ corner kick opportunities while holding a 6-2 advantage.

With the draw, both Gracie VanLangevelde and the Cardinals keeper Garbarz earned shutouts.

“I am proud of how our team dealt with adversity today,” Ozturk added. “There was a lot of weather delays that played a role in the team’s rhythm. However, our team continued to push through it.”
