WestPAC announces all-conference volleyball honors

HOUGHTON — On Thursday, the WestPAC announced their all-conference honors for volleyball. Calumet dominated the awards, with coach Kate Bonacorsi earning Coach of the Year honors and senior setter Laina Karineimi named Player of the Year.

Negaunee’s Marisa Hird earned the other individual honor as she was named Defensive Specialist of the Year.

Karineimi broke Calumet’s school record for assists in a career during the season and was instrumental in distributing the ball around the court, which helped the Copper Kings have three players named to the First Team as well as a fourth on the Second Team.

Joining her in the honors were junior middle hitter Allison Bjorn, senior middle hitter Caitlyn Strom and junior outside hitter Jackie Kiilunen. Junior right side hitter Maddie Torola was named to the Second Team.

Hancock had two players named to the First Team. Senior middle hitter Brielle Kero and junior outside hitter Brooke Koskela were both honored for their efforts. Senior outside hitter Ella Storm and senior middle hitter Lana Aho were both named to the Second Team.

Houghton senior right side hitter Brynn Arko, senior libero Clea Ollanketo, and junior setter Laney Johnson were all named to the First Team. Senior middle hitter Danica Ryynanen and senior middle hitter Sophia Neves were named to the Second Team.
