Gremlins hockey scores four in third to top Flivvers

KINGSFORD — Mikey Maillette scored a goal in each period, and the he and his teammates struck four times in the third as the Houghton Gremlins improved to 4-0 on the season with an 8-2 victory on the road over the Kingsford Flivvers Tuesday night.

Maillette got the Gremlins on the board just 46 seconds into the contest. Connor Arko picked up the lone assist on the goal. Maillette’s second came 6:26 into the game. Wyatt Jenkins was awarded the second assist on the play. Maillette’s hat trick goal made it 5-2 at the 7:05 mark of the third. Grant Schaible picked up the assist on the goal.

The Gremlins only scored one other first-period goal, just 20 seconds after Maillette’s tally, when Jay Halonen found the net.

Kingsford’s Gavin Moore cut the Gremlins’ lead to 3-1 at the 13:33 mark of the middle frame. Looking for an answer, Houghton got it at 16:30 when Jace DeForge scored. Arko and Schaible both picked up assists.

After Kingsford’s Moore scored his second of the game just 22 seconds into the third, Maillette scored his third. DeForge then picked up his second of the game at 9:55 with an assist from Schaible.

Arko struck at 12:42 to make it 7-2. Noah Kreipke earned an assist on the goal. Gage Gullstrand closed out the scoring at 16:02. Jack Sayen picked up the lone assist.

Cooper Flachs made the start for the Gremlins in goal, and he made eight saves to earn the victory.

The Gremlins are back in action Friday when they host Traverse City Central at 7 p.m. at Dee Stadium.
