Records fall at Houghton as Gremlins win Junttila Memorial Invite
HOUGHTON — Throughout his high school track and field career, Houghton senior Brody Mattlia often looked at the school’s record board and noticed Paul Bucklin’s name alongside the 110-meter hurdles.
Bucklin, who earned the Upper Peninsula Class C title in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.4 seconds in 1979, later joined Michigan Tech’s track and field team.
Mattila changed that on this special Tuesday afternoon, setting the new record at 15.26 seconds in the Third Annual Dan Junttila Memorial Invitational.
“I was excited when I found out I got the record,” Mattila said. “I’ve been shooting for this all year. We had perfect conditions and my warm-ups went great. I’m really looking forward to the U.P. Finals (Saturday at Kingsford).”
The Houghton boys ran away with the title by scoring 250 points. They were followed by Negaunee 86 and Dollar Bay 74.
“This was another good day for us,” Gremlins’ coach Erik Johnson said. “Our 3200 relay has been strong all year and Brody setting the record in the 110s helped set the tone. We’ve struggled in shot put and discus for many years, but this year we’ve been doing quite well. The field events have been coming through for us. Everybody was stepping up.”
The Houghton girls also won with 118½ points. Runner-up Calumet scored 104 and Negaunee, which brought a partial team, took third at 86,
Mattila, who will be attending the University of Michigan on an academic scholarship this fall, also won boys’ long jump at 19 feet, 8½ inches and anchored the winning 400 relay (45.74).
“Dan was my coach when I was freshman,” he said. “He had a lot of influence on our program. This is a real special day.”
Also in the field events, Houghton freshman Michael Solena won discus (120-4), junior teammate Trayven Lahti added a first in high jump (5-8) and Hancock senior Myles Lewis captured shot put (45-5½).
Chassell junior Kalvin Kytta copped the 3200 in a school-record 10:08.69 and Houghton junior Birk Seagren took the 1600 in a personal-best 4:46.96.
“It has always been my goal to go under 10 minutes in the 3200,” Kytta said. “This takes some of the pressure off for Saturday. Now I can just go after a sub-10. Birk had a big PR and I’m really happy for him. I paced him for 2½ laps in the 1600, and I know he’s very appreciative. I’m happy do to it for him.”
Seagren finished nearly 40 seconds ahead of the field and led off the winning 3200 relay (8:57.55).
“This is a big confidence boost going into the U.P. Finals,” he said. “Kalvin kind of had a plan in mind and stuck with me for 2½ laps.”
Gremlins’ senior Luke Hill captured the 800 (1:59.88). Classmate Conner Polkky was the 400 winner (55.63) and Bryant Lee added a first in the 200 (23.52).
Dollar Bay’s lone first came on sophomore Liam Tourtillot’s leap of nine feet in pole vault.
West Iron County senior and Central Michigan University recruit Danica Shamon collected four firsts, including three school records.
She took the girls’ 100 (12.75) and set records in the 200 (25.79), 400 (56.74) and high jump (5-5).
“Running in the 56s in the 400 was my goal since last year’s U.P. Finals,” she said. “This feels amazing. I had a Hancock girl (senior Brielle Kero) right beside me and it was close all the way. She really pushed me. Getting the 200 record is also something I wanted to do for some time and I’ve been working on high jump a lot. This takes some of the pressure off, but I have one more high school meet left and I’m going to give it my all. I’m not done. I’m not stopping now.”
Kero was runner-up in the 200 (26.73) and 400 (58.92). She set a new school record with her 400 time, besting the previous time of 59.69 seconds set in 1999.
Houghton junior Lily Ross copped the 800 (2:32.71) and helped the Gremlins take the 3200 relay (10:31.61).
Classmate Roman Trevino Peterlin, also part of that relay, added a first in the 3200 (12:41.57).
Gremlins’ sophomore Camryn Pertile won the 100 hurdles (17.57) and junior Chloe Serafine took the 300s (51.89).
Dollar Bay senior Taryn Maki prevailed in a close 1600 at 5:43, followed by Houghton junior Tessa Rautiola (5:43.62) and Hancock junior Ella Keranen (5:44.05).
Maki, who placed second in the 3200 with a personal-best 13:09.01, was running third well into the final lap of the 1600 before surging ahead.
“I’m completely happy with that,” she said. “After the mile, I didn’t know I had that much left in me. I would not be able to do that stuff without motivation. In the 1600, the adrenalin just kicked in. My goal is the get the school record in the Finals.”
Calumet junior Allison Bjorn captured shot put (31-7) with classmate Jackie Kiilunen runner-up in shot (30- ½) and disc (91-6). Bjorn was third in disc (91-3).
Copper Kings’ senior Caitlyn Strom was runner-up in pole vault on a tie-breaker to Negaunee sophomore Nori Korsman at nine feet.
