CHASSELL — Women’s fastpitch softball was back in action on Monday after a Fourth of July break last week. Games were played at the Boneyard and Chassell.

In Chassell, Tervo agency won their first game against Superior National Bank, 4-0, and then lost big against JBs Sales and Service, 19-8.

In the shutout, Ellen Coppernoll and Mel Baker combined for the win in the circle. According to Baker, strong pitching was key.

“That and good defense,” she said. “As well, little to no errors in the field helped.”

The second game for Tervo was a different story, however, as that one had them down 13-5 after one inning against JB’s Sales and Service.

JB’s player-coach Mackenzie Ekdahl summed it up best.

“Our bats were hot in that first inning,” she said.

Big hits came from Kia Markham, Kaelyn Rouleau and Sadie Biekkola.

“Sadie gets the game ball as she went four for four and played first base well,” said Ekdahl.

While Tervo scored three more runs, JB’s went on to score six more runs and seal a 10-run rule after five innings. This included three more in the third and another three in the fourth.

Swinging a big bat for JB’s in the third was Brynn Arko with an opening triple, which eventually led her home thanks to Ekdahl who earned an RBI. In the fourth, Ellie Hainault did the same with a leadoff triple and was knocked in by a ball put in play by Biekkola.

JB’s Stella Soumis earned the win from the circle striking out five and was backed up by a strong infield and outfield.

Payton Goldsworthy was the winning pitcher with 17 strikeouts. Josie Heinonen took the loss while striking out 13.

For Gold Standard, Payton Goldsworthy had a home run and Kyara Mills and Taylor Goldsworthy each had a single.
