HOUGHTON — The biggest difference between the Negaunee Miners and the Houghton Gremlins on the football field Friday was that the Miners scored early and often. The Miners (5-3) tallied six touchdowns and were well into the fourth quarter at Alumni Field in Houghton before the Gremlins (2-6) had scored one.

The end result was a 42-6 win for Negaunee.

“That is a good football team,” said Gremlins coach Tim Driscoll. “They played hard, and we didn’t. We didn’t control the football well and turned the ball over too many times.”

The Miners first eight points came at the nine-minute mark of the opening quarter. Senior Broc Bonovetz who carried the ball in with ease from the red zone. It was the first of two touch downs for Bonovetz on the night.

Joining him in the two-touchdown club was teammate Evan DellAngelo who scored his first to close out the first quarter. He grabbed a pass and took it 70 yards for a touchdown. The Miners led 14-0 after one.

DellAngelo made it 20-0 in the opening minutes of the second quarter with an interception and an unscathed run of 40 yards for six. Ty Niemi then capped off a 54-yard drive before half, and the Miners led 28-0 as the teams went to their respective locker rooms.

“Game ball goes to DellAngelo,” stated Miners coach Jeff Niemi. “All the boys played well. We blocked and tackled well and played with some intensity and got the job done.”

The score stayed the same in the third. However, the Miners added two more touchdowns in the fourth. Bonovetz had a nine-yard red-zone carry at the 11:45 mark and Anthony Jacobetti followed suit with a touchdown scramble at the 5:15 mark.

The Gremlins avoided the shutout with a Brayden Goudge touchdown run of 65 yards in the final minutes of the game. Their two-point conversion attempt failed, and this one ended with a 42-6 Negaunee victory.

“We fought and battled and will certainly learn from our mistakes,” said Driscoll.
